| Our sheep graze the ancient rig and furrow grassland
around Gunby Hall. The fields are important features of the landscape
and are protected by the National Trust for future generations to
see. Only a minimum amount of chemical and fertiliser are used and
every care is taken to avoid damage by modern machinery
Our ewes are in wintered from the end of December and kept in purpose
built buildings in the home yard. They are fed on a mixture of silage
, hay and straw and started on ewe nuts 8 weeks before they lamb.
We only bring into our flock a small number of "Mule"
females every second year and two or three "Suffolk" rams
each year. Suitable she lambs born from the Mules and fathered by
the Suffolks are retained. These replace breeding females which
are sold when they are unsuitable for breeding. Therefore we can
keep disease risks as low as possible.
